The Causeway Coast is one of the most spectacular walking destinations in Northern Ireland. Famous for its rugged cliffs, golden beaches, ancient castles and the world-renowned Giant’s Causeway, this stunning stretch of shoreline offers hikes to suit every pace and interest. From short, family-friendly strolls to longer coastal treks, the views are unforgettable – with the Atlantic Ocean as your constant backdrop.
Staying at Bushmills Hostel puts you right at the heart of it all. With our central location in Bushmills village, you’re just minutes from iconic landmarks like the Giant’s Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, as well as a wide range of trails along the Causeway Coast.
Here are our top five hikes to add to your itinerary.
1. Causeway Coast Way (~33 miles / 52 km)
The Causeway Coast Way is a long-distance route stretching between Ballycastle and Portstewart. Along the way, you’ll pass some of Northern Ireland’s most iconic sights: sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, the ruins of Dunluce Castle, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge and, of course, the Giant’s Causeway. While the full trail can take 2–3 days to complete, many walkers enjoy shorter sections that still deliver incredible scenery.
2. Ballintoy to Giant’s Causeway (~8 miles / 13 km)
This section of the coast is one of the most breathtaking hikes in Northern Ireland. Starting near Ballintoy Harbour – a filming location for Game of Thrones – the route follows rugged headlands past Dunseverick Castle before finishing at the Giant’s Causeway. It’s the perfect full-day walk for those seeking dramatic landscapes.
3. Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge Walk (~1.4 miles / 2.5 km)
For something shorter but no less memorable, the walk to Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge is a must. Spanning 30 metres above the Atlantic, the bridge links the mainland to a small island once used by salmon fishermen. The walk is relatively gentle, making it suitable for families – but the crossing itself is an unforgettable thrill.
4. Dunseverick Castle to Giant’s Causeway (~5 miles / 8 km)
This moderate coastal walk combines stunning scenery with fascinating history. Beginning at the ruins of Dunseverick Castle, once an ancient royal site, the trail follows grassy clifftops and farmland before reaching the Giant’s Causeway. It’s a quieter way to approach one of the most visited sites in Northern Ireland.
5. White Park Bay Beach Walk (~2 miles / 3 km)
For a more relaxed experience, head to White Park Bay, a sweeping sandy beach framed by dunes and limestone cliffs. This peaceful walk is perfect for birdwatching and photography, especially at sunrise or sunset. Keep an eye out for the herd of cows that sometimes wander down onto the sand!
